About Me

Jim Stulting

Visual Storyteller • Photographer • Cinematographer • Digital Artist

I make things slowly. Photos. Films. Books. Worlds.

Most of my work lives between observation and emotion. Somewhere in the quiet places most people overlook. I use old lenses, altered optics, and improvised tools to see the world in ways that feel more honest than perfect. Whether it's a sleeping cat in golden light or a weed pushing through concrete, I look for the poetry in ordinary moments.

My photo zines are part of an ongoing project to document those moments in fragments of light and texture that feel like memories. Some are left in public places for strangers to find. Others are available by request.

Alongside photography, I direct and shoot documentaries and narrative shorts with a focus on voice, culture, and underrepresented stories. My goal is never just to make something beautiful, but to make something true, even if it’s strange, messy, or quiet.

I also paint over my photographs digitally, creating dreamlike illustrations from a different part of myself. These pieces are more surreal delving into my imagination, but they still begin with a captured image.

This site is a collection of those intersecting threads: the real, the imagined, and the personal.

If something you see speaks to you, I hope you’ll reach out. I’d rather talk as people than pitch as a brand.

Jim Stulting - Portland Based Photographer

I’m an artist, a transcendental storyteller,  based in the Pacific Northwest. I've always been drawn to finding beauty in the ordinary and facing the nuance of life honestly. That instinct, while creatively rich, has made for a difficult life journey, especially in seeking mental health balance in a human-made world that often feels misaligned with how I experience it.

Over the years, art has become a way to survive. Through photography, film, and digital painting, I’ve learned to work toward observing without attachment, and to feel emotion freely without needing to explain or define it. My work is where I can be present, real, and quietly whole.
